This morning I stepped outside to hear the sound of my neighbors wind chime. The breeze gently blowing and the smell of fresh rain permeated the air. It reminded me of how all things must come to an end. That with everything “change” is always on the horizon no matter how steep the mountain or how endless the sea appears. Sometimes, we have to listen to the things that blow in the wind, sometimes we have to take the time to notice the simple things that can bring us joy.

Today, we are hurried. Life has become some sort of race that in the end nobody wins if we pass the things that truly matter without observation. As I sit and write this article I can recall many of times where I was running to fast. How I created my own race. Although I may have hurried to be the first to break the “ribbon”, I cannot count on both hands all the things that I missed along the way. Today, I want to come in last. Last will make me a true winner. Coming in last will allow me to see and hear the things I am suppose to hear and see along the way. It will give me the time I need and deserve to observe all the things that matter, to gain valuable life experiences and life lessons. Knowledge is power. How much knowledge have you lost running to fast ?

Everything starts with our own self……..

Our goal is to encourage other homeschool families, share resources, projects, homeschooling tips, organization, and life’s journey. From creative ideas and strategies to what we have explored and discovered along the way. Come live in a Serendipity World with us !

Teaching descriptive writing is an exciting process. It’s playing around with words, making better substitutes, imagining a scene or character in detail and then expressing it in concrete terms.

descriptive writing ebook

Teaching descriptive writing using the Modeling approach is an exciting way to explore descriptive writing techniques used by different authors – and then put that same technique into practice. It is simple, yet, so effective!

  • How does this work?
  • Where do I begin?
  • What descriptive writing can I use as models?
  • How can a Character/ Place/ Object be described?
  • Is there a tool which can help me?

Yes! My latest Ebook: Modeling the Classics – Teaching Descriptive Writing does exactly that!
In this ebook you will find excellent models of descriptive writing, followed by questions which help the reader identify the author’s techniques. Then, using graphic organizers, the student creates his/her own descriptive writing based on the model. Once you have used this ebook, you will easily be able to apply the same techniques to all sorts of literary passages and continue teaching descriptive writing on your own.
Modeling the Classics aims to encourage children to model their own writing, on styles of authors which they already love.
This e-book contains:

  • Models of excellent literature from Bambi,The Trumpet of the Swan, Paddington Bear, The Hobbit, The Bronze Bow, Brambly Hedge, Wind in the Willows, Charlotte’s Web, Little Britches, Heidi and more.
  • Models of descriptive writing of a person/animal; Step by Step guide to write descriptively based on one of the models. Four other models for practice.
  • Models of descriptive writing of a place;  Step by Step guide to write descriptively based on one of these models. Four other models to be used for practice.
  • Models of descriptive writing of an object;  Step by Step guide to write descriptively based on one of these models. Four oOther models to be used for practice.

Making homeschooling fun for your kids is easy when you involve homeschool craft ideas and activities into their curriculum. There are fantastic homeschool craft ideas that will aid in your children’s fine motor skills development. Rudolph Steiner and Maria Montessori both suggest sewing as a craft idea for home school curriculums. There is a large amount of coordination needed to focus a needle on a specific area. Allowing your child to develop this way with this craft idea will show you the skill a young child can show.

When using a home school curriculum, the best idea is to start your kids off slowly with simple craft ideas that have more to do with threading the needle than actually stitching. A great first project is a “Home school Rainbow Snake” The rainbow snake actually only a needle that is threaded with 30cm of sewing thread. A knot will be at the end of thread to keep it in place on the needle. Thread a small piece of felt, about 2cm x 2cm down the knot. The child will then thread bits of colored felt, beads, bells, buttons, and other trinkets until the thread is full. Tie the end off of the “snake” and use a separate string to hand your child’s first project – the Home School Rainbow Snake!

Moving on past the first homeschool craft idea activity project, your child can make small objects and animals from felt. At first, simply craft ideas and patterns are the best choice.
The benefits of homeschooling craft ideas are endless. Developing fine motor skills and calming the children are two common ones. It has been noted that children who may have difficulty concentrating on tasks may spend large amounts of time sewing and using other craft ideas. It is ok to let your child spend multiple hours creating their craft! While they are creating you can easily be asking them multiplication facts or to spell words.

Regardless of what home school curriculum you choose to use, homeschool craft ideas will benefit every child who spends the time creating things. The home school craft ideas engage their imagination and expand their world horizons! Children who use their imagination often will be able to learn other subjects with great ease. You must agree that is what childhood is truly about. Fun kids craft ideas and play time allows for learning, growing, and expanding. So, do yourself and your child a favor and incorporate home school craft ideas into the curriculum and awaken their imagination.

Make a Pirate Fancy Dress for Halloween or for a party

Every kid wants to be a pirate, here we’ll show you how to make your own Pirate Fancy Dress outfit. The allure of hunting for treasure, sailing the seven seas, adventures etc all appeal to a child’s heart. Creating a pirate costume for a fancy dress party or for Halloween isn’t that difficult. You just need basic clothing that can be bought in thrift shops or charity bazaars.
  1. Pants can be either black or brown. Choose pants that are slimmer at the ankles. These fit well in boots. Else roll up the pants till just below the knees and sew or safety pin them in shape. For girls you can use slacks.
  2. Next is the shirt. Try to find one with ruffles or puff sleeves. If you can’t find one, a plain white shirt will do also. Just cut off the sleeves, and then cut slits, fold back the cloth to form a V. Sew in place. For added embellishment, sew on some gold painted buttons.
  3. If you want a dirty looking shirt, make a tea using T-bags and dip the shirt in it. This works very well with cotton shirts. Rinse the shirt after you have achieved the desired color.
  4. You can stick a Jolly Roger sticker to the pocket of the shirt if desired.
  5. For the sash around the waist, you can use a red scarf twisted or even better a piece of rope.
  6. Make a black patch using felt. Cut a piece a little bigger than the eye area. Cut the rubber from a party hat and glue to the ends of the patch for easy wearing. Wear the patch before the bandanna so that the rubber doesn’t slip.
  7. For the bandanna, use a red scarf folded in a triangle shape. You can use a dotted or a striped scarf as well. Stick some cross and bone stickers. Alternately for a girl, you can attach some sequins to the edge of the scarf.
  8. Cut a cardboard in the shape of a sword. Cover with aluminum foil, glue some gold glitter on the hilt area and glue some crystal beads to resemble jewels. Make a loop using ribbon to wear on the waist.
  9. Wear some chunky gold chains and a clip-on earring. Use a tiny piece of cotton dipped in Vaseline on the back of the ear before clipping the earring to prevent any pain.
  10. Use a black liner and draw a mustache. Alternately, you can draw a small skull and bones design on the cheek.
